Abstract Background
Due to its tightly defined mandate the NHS Health Check programme has traditionally delivered a “one size fits all” approach through an invitation to a face-to-face check. We are developing a broader, bespoke, digitally enabled service approach; better optimised to patient preferences and clinical need.Aims:To develop an online health check that approximates the face-to-face check from user entered data.To offer this to non-responder residents and monitor their engagement.Methodology: The Design Council provided coaching and guidance in scoping out the project deliverables. We worked with our IT partner (who manages our routine invitations) to develop our new Digital Health Check web-tool; modelled on the “Heart Age” test, but using QRISK2, and with a shorter list of locally-relevant recommendations. SMS invitations to access and complete the tool were sent to non-responding eligible residents between January and April 2019.
Results
We approached a total of 3,166 people (2,998 SMS's successfully delivered). 832 people clicked on the embedded hyperlink, 392 completed the Digital Health Check and 42 people were found to be at high risk of CVD. Those at high risk were offered targeted advice and recommended to book a full NHS Health Check; those at low risk were reassured and signposted to relevant local healthy lifestyle opportunities.
Conclusion
Whilst digital solutions should not be considered as the panacea approach, we have demonstrated through early evidence that a digital / non-digital mix approach can support increased re-engagement among residents who have traditionally declined the face-to-face NHS Health Check offer.
