Abstract The highly commended and respected placement programme for biomedical science undergraduates has significantly benefited not only 167 placement students but the large number of healthcare scientists involved with the programme. Each September, following application and interview, successful second year BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science students commence a placement year in one of Public Health England Colindale's (PHE Colindale) laboratories. Each student receives a personal training programme and is guaranteed training to complete the Registration Training Portfolio for the Institute of Biomedical Science Certificate of Competence enabling them to register, upon graduation, as a biomedical scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Learning and training are facilitated via reading, undertaking bench-based practical exercises, attending practical workshops, tutorials and seminars. Assessment is via demonstration of competence, completing the portfolio, giving an oral presentation and production of two posters. This programme benefits not only the students but the healthcare scientists of PHE Colindale via personal development, ensuring their knowledge and skills are current and experiences gained by supervising and training the students. These activities are presented as evidence of Continuing Professional Development, a mandatory requirement for biomedical scientists and clinical scientists to be retained on the HCPC register. Since the programme commenced in 2006, 167 students representing 26 universities have undertaken a placement year. Sixty one of 130 graduates have returned to work in PHE Colindale and six are supervisors of this year's cohort of 19 students. The programme has been shown to have significant effects on the students' final year, e.g. a student projected to graduate with a third class degree graduated with a 2:1 degree following their placement year. The programme is constantly under review and the lessons learnt, which have been numerous, are immediately implemented ensuring the programme is the best that can be offered and its reputation retained.
