Abstract Introduction: Although a previous study on Japanese children and adolescents reported that there is an association between socioeconomic status (SES) and body types, the association between SES and nutrient/food intakes has not been examined. This study aimed to reveal the association between nutrient/food intakes of children and adolescents and household income, which is one of the indices of SES, using data from national statistical surveys.Methods: The data from “National Health and Nutrition Survey” and “Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions” in 2011 were used in this study. Out of 1160 subjects aged from 6 to 18 in the NHNS, 455 subjects were excluded due to a lack of necessary items. The data of 651 (children: 360, adolescents: 291) subjects were collated from their parents' academic backgrounds from the CSLC. The household income was classified into 3 groups according to the division of the survey: (1) less than 2 million yen (low); (2) 2 to less than 6 million yen (middle); (3) more than 6 million yen (high).Results: Multiple regression analysis was conducted on all the subjects, and significant differences between low-income households and high-income households were observed on energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and vitamin A intakes. Significant differences were not observed on other nutrient/food group intakes. Conclusion: This study indicated the association between household income and some nutrient intakes of children and adolescents. However, and the means of food intake indicated by household income was not revealed. External funding details This study was supported by JSPS Grants-in Aid for Scientific Research.
