Abstract The wider determinants of health have been acknowledged as making a large contribution to health outcomes. Also referred to as 'the causes of the causes', the wider determinants are central to the preventative agenda and the production and reproduction of health inequalities. Working to reduce the negative impact of the wider determinants is therefore critical for a healthier and fairer society. The nature of the wider determinants can sometimes make it difficult for public health professionals to take action, with many determinants falling within the domain of other disciplines, such as planning or economics for example. The Wider Determinants of Health tool has been created by the Risk Factor Intelligence Team to help turn the wealth of evidence on this topic into action, presenting indicators and resources across seven thematic domains. The tool aims to promote (and maintain a focus upon) these factors as important for our health. Collating and presenting indicators in this way raises the profile of wider determinants, and gives professionals the data they need to make the case for change in their local areas. In addition, the tool goes beyond our traditional approach of indicator presentation by linking to a broad range of resources that encourage further action. These resources include: links to other data and analytical resources to provide users with more flexibility than can be delivered in a single data tool; evidence, guidance and policy resources to help users make the case for action; and examples of existing actions taken to tackle wider determinants.
