Abstract Following engagement with stakeholders and communities, LCC have commissioned a Best Start Peer Support service designed to enable and empower pregnant women, parents and carers of 0-2s in the Leeds South and East CCG area to become champions in their own communities supporting their peers to ensure every child has the Best Start in Life. The organisation delivering the service has experience in community development and using creative approaches to engage and develop skills and confidence in volunteers. A course is delivered aimed to empower participants to make positive decisions around parenting, create Peer Support networks with other parents/carers and boost confidence, skills and knowledge within communities. The course is co-produced with families and is delivered to maximise expertise and support from experienced community development workers, a paid service user consultant and a member of staff from the health visiting team. Those completing the course are supported to volunteer or deliver paid-for sessional work in their communities. The service has been commissioned to be user-led allowing those trained to devise their own action plans around how they wish to support their peers. This may include buddying at new activities such as antenatal or postnatal exercise, promoting key messages at community events or where local people congregate or simply providing someone to talk to who has experience of becoming a parent or going through pregnancy. External funding details The Health Inequalities Fund was provided by Leeds South and East CCG to allow Public Health to develop new programmes of work
