Abstract The Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP) framework provides a platform through which the delivery of local public health services, such as weight management, can be maximised.Obesity remains a public health priority. Given the numbers and associated costs, scalable and inclusive solutions are required. The HLP model provides opportunity to reach more people effectively.Slimming World (SW) is a weight management organisation with a well-established referral programme (SWoR). In County Durham a new model has been developed with HLPs central to the referral process. This evaluation compares HLP-referral outcomes with those achieved via GP referrals. MethodsTwenty-one HLPs referred adults (BMI ≥25kg/m2), to local SW groups. Weight data was electronically collected. Data was extracted for SWoR GP-referral led schemes, with similar referral criteria.ResultsThe mean weight/ BMI changes (SD) achieved through the 12 week intervention, using last weight observed analysis for adults referred May - October 2016, attending local SW groups, were -4.39% (3.48)/ -1.54 kg/m2 (1.27) and -4.74% (4.12)/ -1.63 kg/m2 (1.41) for HLP (n=1020) and GP (n=5482) referrals respectively. Those achieving a 3% weight loss were 58.8 and 60.0% and achieving a 5% weight loss, 40.3 and 42.8, respectively (p>0.05) ConclusionsGuidelines recommend that local services are identified and included in an integrated approach to weight management. This evaluation demonstrates the important role that HLPs can play in referring and signposting people to weight management services. Participants who engaged with SW groups achieved comparable weight outcomes whether being referred via the HLP or the more traditional GP route.
