Abstract Background:With the aim of identifying current progress on tobacco control in Walsall and to raise the profile of this as a continued priority area for action, the PHE CLeaR Assessment tool was used to:Review current work in WalsallIdentify strengths and gapsHelp inform key priorities and areas for action.Methods:The CLeaR assessment process involved completion of a:comprehensive self assessment on a broad range of tobacco control activitypeer assessment by an external teamOutcomes:The CLeaR assessment outcome and summary report produced by the peer assessment team highlights some key areas: Evaluating the impact of the current tobacco control plan and for a new plan to be put in place Recognition that work could be strengthened by wider engagement across the council and partner organisationsEnsuring that appropriate support is available to the most vulnerable groups Informed by this, a work plan for tobacco control in Walsall has been identified:A review of the Tobacco Control Plan for WalsallSupport for the establishment of a tobacco control boardSupport for sign up to the declaration on tobacco control Insights work to better understand local people's views on our stop smoking servicesRoll out of a Comprehensive Tobacco Control Campaign Discussion:The CLeaR Assessment tool has been successfully used to review tobacco control work in Walsall and to identify and inform ongoing activity.
