Abstract The Five Year Forward View set out our ambition for 'the NHS as an employer to set a national example in the support it offers its own staff to stay healthy'. Twelve organisations, employing over 70,000 staff, agreed to lead implementation. They committed to develop an organisational culture which promotes health and wellbeing (by securing board and clinical leadership, training line managers, and improving their food offer) and provide a tailored range of initiatives for staff (including mental health and physiotherapy services, offering the NHS Health Check to staff over 40, and promoting physical activity). This will be evaluated and, if successful, could be adopted by all NHS employers. We've taken national action on healthy food by convening a group of the major food suppliers to the NHS, designing NHS sugar tax trials that has set the national example, designed & commenced 2 behavioural insight trials that apply the latest behavioural science to encourage healthy food choices. We've developed national policy with Dame Carol Black which includes roles and responsibilities for board and clinical leaders and helped deliver line management training to staff. Evaluation of the implementation is key, we've procured a health and wellbeing survey which will be matched to a comparison group, we will be conducting a full evaluation and introduced new questions in 2016 NHS Staff Survey. We have introduced a national CQUIN in 2016/17 covering 3 areas of the programme; Healthy food choices, uptake of flu vaccinations and introducing mental health, physical activity and physiotherapy schemes.
